5 Powerful Tips How to Cold Call Properly

How to cold call Do you use phones to sell, make appointments, or follow existing clients?

If yes, you are cold calling. Even if you are calling an existing customer to talk about a new service that you know they will help them, it is a cold call. You are interrupting them and there is a good chance that they are not in the mood to be interrupted.

The good news is, cold calling can be very effective if corrected. This can be the world's worst job if you keep doing it wrong.

The problem is, so many people who use phones to sell are terrible at cold calling they don't no how to do cold calling! We've all experienced it, so we know a bad sales pitch when we hear one. We should be a little more sympathetic, perhaps, as salutations to people when we are called to ourselves by a fellow professional. However, we also usually try and get rid of that poor person as soon as possible.

So, how to cold calling properly?

The answer is to avoid any and all of these methods to spoil cold calling. If you know that you have a tendency to act this way on the phone, then it is time to stop and fix it.

1. Not getting ready

This is the worst. I pick you up the phone only to congratulate you on the rustle of paper, deep breathing, and a conversation with a colleague. Be ready for a call. Get into the right frame of mind. Have a drink before the call, not just the person picking it up. Every lead you have is a potential sale and if you are not ready for the call, don't even pick up the phone!

2. Mr. / Little Miss Generic

Do you all sound the same? Do you use the same lines, the same empty promises that everyone tells me to sell the same thing? If so, chances are good that I am going to go through a tunnel very soon and bite you. How can you make yourself remarkable in some way? Seth Godin talks about purple cows because it makes you stand up and pay attention. Why should anyone pay attention to you?

3. Super Scripted

I think sales scripts have their own place, and it is in the paper recycling bin in your office. A lot of sales people read from a script that is generic, boring and does not ask a question until page three. If you want to audition with a monologue, please do not call me. If you want to strike up a conversation with me, put the script down and talk to find out what I want and possibly sell me something. It is okay to prepare a few lines for a clear introduction, but after this, have a proper two-sided conversation.

4. no energy

fourth main point how to cold call properly. Do you really hate your job as much as you don't want to be there? If yes, please call a helpline or something else instead of calling a potential customer. How many sales people do you just hear going through the motions? It impresses me that you think I should be interested in what you have to say when you are not interested! Instead, go for a walk, do some jumping jacks, and then return to the phone before calling. If you're still not excited about the call, maybe just go and have a chat with HR and save them the inevitable conclusion.

5. Getting to the point

The other day, someone called me to provide a unique, government-backed investment opportunity for my technology business, which would be better than my existing supplier and cheaper than what I had used before. It looked great, so I asked him to tell me what he was saying. The same words as above were rearranged and repeated. So I asked again what he was selling. He got frustrated and both of us put the phone down. If you cannot express clearly what you are selling, chances are good that I am going to find something more interesting than speaking with you.

Okay, so these may sound like obvious tips to improve your cold calling, but the world is convicted of these crimes every year.

Top tip - record your calls and play them back. Do you make any of these mistakes? If you do, then you really know what to do!
